New Year's Eve donor shortage: Pay forward a pint

Thursday 31st Dec 2015

The Lifeblood is urging Victorians to ‘pay forward’ a pint and give blood to someone in need this New Year’s Eve.

The Lifeblood still needs around 200 Victorian donors to give blood on 31 December to ensure trauma patients will receive the products they need in the first days of the New Year.

Prof Mark Fitzgerald, Director of Trauma Services at The Alfred – Australia’s busiest trauma hospital – said the holiday period is a busy time for his team.

“When a patient has lost a lot of blood after a severe injury we need to replace it quickly – often in large volumes,” Prof Fitzgerald said.

“Without fast access to donor blood even our most talented doctors and nurses will not be able to save the patient.”

Beyond this date, an additional 200 donors are also needed on the 2 and 3 of January. Donors who can’t make New Year’s Eve sessions are urged to book on one of these days.

Lifeblood Acting CEO Jacqui Caulfield said Victorian donors could ‘pay forward a pint’ to a cancer patient by giving blood.

“Many locals will be celebrating the New Year with a few drinks surrounded by friends and family,” she said.

“For seriously ill Australians, a blood transfusion is the only pint they’ll get to enjoy this New Years – but it’s one that will let them spend more time with their family and friends.

“Never fear, our opening hours for the 31st December are early morning to mid-afternoon so there’s still plenty of time to join in the celebrations!

“The need for blood never takes a break and an hour of your time could mean a lifetime to someone else.”
